USUALLY a group of bikers from Somerset East get together only for fun rides and spins on dirt roads around town as well as trails in and around their beloved Boschberg.

This year, however, they decided to let their bikes do the roaring for a good cause.

Huis Silwerjare, the old age home in town, was chosen as their beneficiary. They recently gathered at the Golf Club for an adventure with a purpose.

They were raring to go, but the staff of Huis Silwerjare had other plans as they had prepared a special treat, a delicious breakfast, for the biker boys. No use riding on growling stomachs, the staff argued.

After breakfast, 30 bikers departed from the Golf Club House on their journey via Glen Avon, Klipfontein, Swaershoek and back to town to meet up at the Golf Club at the end of their charity rally.

According to some of the bikers, the ride was challenging at times because of muddy roads but mostly thrilling because of the fresh air and lush and beautiful surrounds.

A few bikers had mishaps but nothing that could not be attended to and fixed.

They were treated to a hearty lunch by hosts, Johan and Bea Schoeman, at Buffelshoek, after which they returned safely to the Golf Club after a sometimes gruelling 215km. Once more they were treated to another magnificent meal; this time a “spitbraai” provided by Gideon Jordaan and his family.

An adventurous and thrilling but fulfilling day was had by all – bikers as well as onlookers. Already some of the bikers have expressed their thoughts that this adventurous rally for a good cause might just become an annual event.

A handsome amount was netted in aid of Huis Silwerjare and its residents. The bikers are thankful for everyone in the community who was involved whether it was organising, sponsoring, or making financial contributions in order to make the event a roaring success.
