MOTORISTS looking for the pay toilets at Bedford’s Caltex garage these past few days had to blink twice because, in place of the building, all they could see was a massive hole, four metres deep.

“No, not a mega long-drop loo,” Mid Karoo Express was assured, “but the cavity for new fuel tanks – part of the garage upgrade.”

Although the construction will cause inconvenience for several months, many locals welcomed the process as a boost to Bedford’s appearance and economy.

The tanks were laid in place by Sunday morning.

The largest tank has a capacity of 30 000 litres and the other two can hold 23 000 litres each.

With thousands of visitors converging on Bedford for the Garden Festival in just a few weeks’ time (October 19-21), work on the facility upgrade is proceeding around the clock.

A new forecourt and canopy and a new 24-hour FreshStop convenience store are part of what the district and visitors can look forward to.
