ON Wednesday, July 18, the community of the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality, including officials, came together to celebrate the centenary birthday of Tata Nelson Mandela.
People from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, came together to clean up their communities or to hand out some soup to the underprivileged.
The morning started with the 100 men march, where men from the municipality marched against the abuse of women and children. The march started at the Police Academy and ended at the Town Hall.
After the march, different teams were set up to clean their wards. The municipality donated black bags, gloves and provided transport for the refuge.
The municipal workers also joined in and helped in their communities.
The elderly were invited to the hall and given some soup by the women from the Tourism School and throughout the different wards, businessmen spent their time handing out soup. The CMR reached out to the children in the crèches where the chairperson, Sakkie van Zyl, told the children a story and handed out some chips.
To end the day, there was a friendly rugby match between the Graaff-Reinet team and the Stellenbosch University Dagbreek Hostel team.
