Inxuba Yethemba Municipality (IYM) has received a national award for the most improved municipality in South Africa.
The award was given to IYM as it had improved from a disclaimer to an unqualified audit opinion.
“I was very surprised at a gala dinner after a SALGA meeting on August 26 and 27 when I was informed that IYM would be receiving an award,” said Ray Shweni, mayor of IYM.
Shweni said that he was very honoured to receive the award and thanked the finance department for their contribution.
He also confirmed that the 2017/2018 financial statements had been sent in to the Auditor General.
“IYM is considered one of the worst performing municipalities in the Eastern Cape, but this award shows that things are not as bad as people perceived them to be,” Shweni said.
Lucky Malaudzi, IYM’s chief financial officer, said it was a great honour for the municipality to have moved to this step and that by the next financial year they would make it to a clean audit. He thanked the people in the relevant departments for their hard work.
