SOME of the best tennis players from the Eastern Cape came together to participate in the Boet Collett Men’s Doubles tennis tournament at the Fish River Tennis Club on May 5.

A total of 32 players came from as far afield as Port Elizabeth, Kirkwood, Aliwal North, Burgersdorp, Noupoort, Graaff-Reinet, Middelburg and Cradock to compete.

The defending champion, Ricky de Klerk, and his brother, Robert, both of Cradock, won the finals in two sets over Merwe Serfontein and Tony van Zyl from Addo and Port Elizabeth (7-6, 6-3).

Tiaan and Ruan Mostert, and Pierre de Klerk and Jaco Koen also progressed to the semi-finals.

Garth Collet had the great privilege of playing with his grandson, Andrew.

Each year, the Ian Cameron Trophy for sportsmanship and good spirit is awarded and this year the prize went to Donovan Hammond and Jason Muir.

The tournament committee thanked all their sponsors, without whose sponsorship the tournament would not have been possible, as well as organisers Freddie van Zyl and William Collet.

The Boet Collett Tournament is always held on the first Saturday in May and is a special day as the entire community gets involved.
