The fight over the mayoral election continued yesterday, June 14, as the council was left without an approved budget and IDP.
The DA, EFF and Freedom Front Plus abstained from voting, not recognizing the new mayor, Willem Säfers, a legal voted in mayor and chairperson of the mayoral committee.
The ANC and CSA voted in favour of the budget and the IDP, but with the DA, EFF and FF+ not voting, the implementing of financing projects and an approved budget left the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality in the dark.
Säfers was voted in with the help of the CSA speaker’s casting vote.
The DA, EFF and FF+ after the election said the casting vote was illegal and they will fight it in court.
DA councillor, Joy Williams after the election told the voted out mayor, Ewald Loock, “you will be back in your mayoral seat soon.”
