Ewald Loock from the Democratic Alliance is still the mayor of the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality.
This follows plans by the ANC and CSA to remove him as Mayor and vote in an ANC candidate as Mayor.
A council meeting was held yesterday, May 4 where a motion of no confidence in Loock and Chief Whip, Ricardo Smith (DA) was tabled by the ANC.
With 12 seats on each side of the working together agreement, the agreement painters – the DA, EFF and Freedom Front Plus – walked out of the meeting, leaving the ANC and CSA without a quorum to vote.
According to a statement issued by Eldrige Ruiters- DA Dr Beyers Naude Caucus Chief Whip, the
walk-out took place due to the fact that the Speaker of Council, Cheslin
Felix of the Compatriots of South Africa (CSA), failed to arrange for the
virtual participation of DA councillor Danie Bezuidenhout, who recently
underwent an operation and is confined to his home.
“The
Speaker’s failure was nothing more than a ploy by the ANC-CSA coalition to
manufacture a majority in council in order to remove Mayor Loock and Cllr Smith,” Ruiters said.
Dr
Beyers Naude is currently a hung council with the DA occupying 10 seats. The
Freedom Front Plus and EFF each have one. The ANC has 11 seats and the CSA one.
