Four people have died, while four others sustained injuries when a single vehicle lost control and overturned on the N6 Road between Stutterheim and East London yesterday afternoon, June 4.
The incident occurred at approximately 14:30.
Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said that a Ford Ranger Double cab with eight occupants was travelling from Stutterheim heading to East London.
The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and overturned, killing the four on the scene, three male passengers and one female, while four other occupants sustained injuries. Two are critically injured and one in a serious condition. The driver only sustained slight injuries. The injured were to rushed to Frere Provincial Hospital for further medical management.
“It’s alleged that driving under the influence of alcohol led to reckless and negligent driving as cited by eye witnesses on the scene. The non-use of safety belts by occupants in the vehicle contributed to this large number of deceased and severe injuries sustained as all were ploughed all over the place from the vehicle that was speeding,” Binqose said.
A case of culpable homicide had been opened at Kei Road Saps for further investigations.
