A NON-PROFIT company, Phulutho Activities, has joined hands with PH Sports, as they look to revive a high school league for netball and to see whether there is an interest in football and rugby as well.
The company, directed by former Eastern Cape Sports Confederation treasurer, Phumelele Hlati, received R65 000 from the National Lottery Commission to start this school league. The league, which will include three sporting codes, was launched in Komani yesterday at Luvuyo Lerumo High School under the name Netball Splash Series.
Hlati said he took the initiative to revive the high school league for netball, but also for soccer and rugby, so that they can be included for next year’s budget.
“The plan was to start small with netball only, hence the series name. We have, however, included rugby and soccer on a limited basis, but we hope that if this year’s initiative is a success, to fully include both soccer and rugby for next year’s budget and application,” said Hlati.
The games kicked off on the very same day, as schools took on each other in different sports grounds in Komani. The rugby and netball matches kicked off at 13:00 at Luvuyo Lerumo High School grounds, while soccer was played at Dumpy Adams Sports Complex. The high schools that are taking part in this school league are John Noah High School, Kwa-Komani Comprehensive School, Luvuyo Lerumo High School, Maria Louw High School and Nkwanca Public High School.
