AS part of their school outreach programme Cat Conservation Trust paid a visit to excited Grades R to 6 learners at Fish River Primary School on September 18.
Through the programme, which is sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission, Cat Conservation Trust educates the children about their natural heritage in the four smaller cat species, as well as the effects of litter, poisons and snares.
Cat Conservation Trust is a non-profit trust that aims at making the public aware of the plight of South Africa’s small wild cats through research and education.
South Africa has seven species of indigenous wild cats. The big cats of Africa, which are the lion, leopard and cheetah, get a lot of attention through tourism and the fact that they are easier to spot than their smaller cousins.
Cat Conservation Trust cat enclosures are situated near Cradock and they have taken their outreach programme to several schools in the area.
Last week, in addition to visiting Fish River Primary School, they also visited Schoombie Primary and Middelburg High School.
They have also planned trips to Elinus Primary and Baroda Primary before finishing out the term with a preschool in Middelburg.
