“GREAT live music is an essential part of the menu,” said Melina Smit, one of the organisers of Cradock’s Karoo Food Festival (Friday to Sunday, April 26 to 28).

“And we are very excited to welcome Big Man and Bear this year.”

Singer and guitarist, Hugo Kleinhans and singer and pianist, Megan du Toit, make up the duo.

They will perform several sets during the day on both Saturday and Sunday, at the festival’s Deli Food Market at The Palms.

Their versatile sound centres on the use of live looping to create and build songs on the spot. No genre is off limits as they are capable of performing intimate folk and jazz songs, as well as rock, pop and even the occasional techno and dance songs.

Armed only with an acoustic guitar, keyboards, and other gadgetry, they can create a rich soundscape of musical tones, focusing on tight harmonies and subtle vocal interplay.

“We aspire to deliver a performance that takes our audiences on a journey,” said Du Toit.

“Whether it be a nostalgic trip down memory lane by playing a ‘golden oldie’ from years gone by, or perhaps getting everyone involved in belting out a favourite sing-along song. Big Man and Bear always feel humbled and inspired by the opportunity to share our love of music with others,” she added.

Hailing from Port Elizabeth, Big Man and Bear recently returned from performing on cruise ships off the coast of Australia for the past two years.

They are now taking some time out to perform and work on various music projects back home in South Africa.

Chris Britz will provide the sounds for Friday night’s Brews and Braai party at The Palms.
