The African National Congress (ANC) again governs the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality.

Willem Säfers was elected as the new Mayor during a council meeting held today, June 7. Thembekile Spogter (ANC) took the seat as council’s Chief Whip.

After numerous attempts by the ANC to vote out Ewald Loock (DA) as Mayor and Ricardo Smith (DA) as Chief Whip, they succeeded in their motion of no confidence in Loock and Smit on May 18 when the Speaker, Cheslin Felix, had the casting vote.

In both cases voting came to a standstill with a 12 against 12 vote (Loock vs Säfers). Speaker Felix had the deciding vote and elected Säfers and Spogter to fill these positions.

The DA by mouth of councilor Joy Williams gave notice that the DA, EFF and FF+ is of meaning that the motion of no confidence was illegal.

“We will contact the Eastern Cape MEC for local governance to raise our concern and objection,” Williams said.

The DA’s chief whip, Eldridge Ruiters also told Felix they will see him in court.
