The display of the Rubidge fossil collection is being investigated by the Dr. Beyers Naude Local Municipality (DBNLM) council, Heritage Society, the Department of Sports Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), and local museum organisations.
The DBNLM’s executive committee took note of recommendations by the Local Economic Development Committee to, in principle, approve a proposed display and exhibition centre, showcasing the Rubidge collection in the Karoo bio-diversity exploration centre of paleontological and bio-diversity research in the Parsonage Street Library.
Prof Bruce Rubidge did his research on this subject and is still studying the forming of rocky mountains, structures and phosphate in the area, formed up to 300-million years ago.
Council approved the investigation in view of the job creation spin-off and the national and international investment of the project, as well as the related sustainable economical growth for the municipal area and the Karoo region.
It is proposed that the exhibition must be facilitated as a business plan by all relevant stakeholders.
Further engagement with Rubidge, the Heritage Committee, DSRAC, museums and the provincial minister responsible for museums are required by council for the proposed fossil exhibition to proceed.
