The swift reaction of security companies in Komani foiled an armed robbery in progress last night, July 10, at 20:40 at a liqour store situated next to the N6 road.

According to police spokesperson Captain Ursula Roelofse, it is alleged that a security guard was on duty and busy with patrols at the liqour store when he was approached by two unknown men that pointed him with a firearm.

“The suspects tied his hands with cable ties and locked him in the toilet,” said Roelofse.

She said the alarm was then activated by the suspects activities and the security company responded.

“A shootout occurred between the suspects and the security company officials,” said Roelofse.

“Members of a second security company were also alerted and came to assist.

“The suspects then ran on foot into the bushes.”

Roelofse said on further investigation it was found that the door was forced open and that explosives were used to break the bullet resistant window at the office.

“Explosives were also found next to the safe door, but it was still closed,” said Roelofse.

She said the SAPS was alerted of the incident and the investigation will be taken over by the Organised Crime Unit.

Roelofse further said there were no arrests at this stage.

If any person can assist with information regarding the incident should contact Lt/Col Mahlanza at 082 319 79 44 at the Queenstown Detectives.
