The Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Fezeka Nkomonye, handed over sports equipment to six sporting clubs and four sport hubs in Komani last week.

The main purpose was to revive the interest of sport in rural areas especially during the time of the pandemic. The programme aspires to promote sound inter-governmental relations, Local Economic Development tourism and social cohesion between districts by using sport as a vehicle to forge new partnerships and strengthen existing relationships.

Approximately 30 people from a total of six clubs and four hubs from Komani and surrounding areas attended the event that was held at the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture boardroom.

The nominated sports clubs were City Revengers FC from Lahlangubo Village in Whittlesea, Oxton Boxing Club from Oxton Village in Whittlesea, Brazilian Netball Club from Zwartwater Village, Golden Boys Boxing Club from Molteno, Bengu Boxing Club from Bengu Village and Xhalanga Blues FC from Cala.

There were also four Sports Hubs which were present to receive sporting equipment and those hubs were Ezibele Sport Hub, Baccles Farm Sport, KuBengu Sport Hub, and Indwe Sport Hub.

Weziwe Kea-Mrubata, the coach of Brazilian Netball Club from Zwartwater Village said, “Everything that we can receive to support sport at our club is always welcome and appreciated.”

MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape, Fezeka Nkomonye, said, “We will continue monitoring the situation and remain committed to working with our partners in ensuring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sport federations, recreation entities, affected events and programmes will be minimised to ensure sustainability of the sector.

With the providing of needed sports equipment through the Club Development Programme, it is hoped that affiliated clubs can commence some of their very significant activities which will be instrumental in creating a province in which all who call it home can live healthier lifestyles, in safer communities, more prepared for tomorrow’s economy.”
