AN audacious new play by Tony Jackman, writer and chef from Cradock, will be introduced at the Karoo Writers’ Festival later this month.
The play will be a staged reading of Mein Camp – The Audacious Struggle of Le Clerq Goldberg, which will be performed by actor Emil Lars in the role of the title character.
“This one-actor play is a piece of cabaret theatre in the tradition of the Weimar Republic era ‘Kabarett’ of the late 1920s and early 1930s – audacious and politically irreverent,” said Jackman.
The story line is that celebrated Johannesburg-based theatre maker, J Bobs Tshabalala, is dramaturge and producer for the play reading, promising all the things the play would need like costumes, lights and props.
“A presentation towards a full production,” said Tony.
Emil Lars, the actor, slips into several other characters during the course of the story, including BJ Vorster, HF Verwoerd, Adolf Hitler and St Peter at the Pearly Gates.
The staged reading of Jackman’s new play will be held at Karoo Brew in Cradock during the annual Karoo Writers’ Festival at 19:30 on Friday, July 20.
This year’s Karoo Writers’ Festival starts on July 19 and continues through to Sunday, July 22, when there will be, among other attractions, an excursion to Buffelhoek and Olive Scheiner’s grave.
