FIVE traditional councils at Qhumanco Great Place near Cofimvaba received much-needed sports equipment and attire valued at R1.4 million.
The aim of the donation – handed over by the Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Fezeka Bayeni, to all registered and participating clubs within the identified traditional councils – was to revive an avid interest in sport in rural areas, villages and farming communities.
Several sports leagues will be established in previously neglected rural areas.
It is furthermore hoped to promote sound intergovernmental relations, tourism and social cohesion between districts by using sport, as well as to forge new partnerships and to strengthen existing relationships.
The five traditional councils are Esiphaqeni TC (OR Tambo), EBhotwe TC (Amathole), Ntlangwini TC (Alfred Nzo), Qhumanco TC (Chris Hani) and Mokhesi/Zava TC (Joe Gqabi).
“We call on all parents and stakeholders to encourage the establishment of clubs within their respective villages – especially ones which cater for the disabled, women and youth,” says Bayeni.
Previously, athletic equipment such as discus, javelin, high jump, crossbars with landing mattresses, shot put, and tape measures for juniors and seniors, was distributed to all five traditional councils.
