SCHOOLS across the country received a well-deserved boost with the recent launch of the Twizza Super School Series which has one clear goal in mind – to crown South Africa’s best athletics school.
Twizza, South Africa’s first official ‘Proudly South African’ carbonated soft drink, acquired its first taste of youth athletics in March this year when they signed a three-year title sponsorship deal with the Twizza ASA U18 and U20 Track and Field Championships.
“Athletics is a major sport in South African schools and boasts immense talent at both the junior and senior level,” said Ajee Valentine, Twizza national sponsorship manager.
“The youth and junior championships was the perfect introduction to the sport of athletics.
“We tasted something great and we want more. We are excited to further expand our involvement with this exciting sport, at school level, by launching the Twizza Super School Series.
“Not only will the series present future track and field stars with healthy competition, they will also be given a premium platform to represent their schools.
“The winning school will officially be crowned South Africa’s best athletics school and will take home the coveted Twizza ‘Taste The Moment’ Trophy and bragging rights for a year,” continued Valentine.
“The Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale will boast entertainment like no other with the introduction of a live performing arts element from the qualifying schools.
“The series provides us with an excellent platform to support a sport that we believe in, while creating awareness of the Twizza brand.”
In addition to performing for a large audience, the performing arts groups and schools can look forward to taking home exciting prizes compliments of Twizza. The mechanics of the selection process will be released at a later stage.
“We are excited to team up with Twizza,” said Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports.
“Not only will the series provide athletes with the opportunity to perform at a higher level, but it will also expose the next generation of athletes to the mechanics of a major series from call rooms to heats and finals; not to mention the aspect of travel.
“We are proud to host a high octane schools track and field series that will keep spectators on the edge of their seats.”
All schools are invited to enter the regional qualifiers. A points system will identify the top 40 schools, which will progress to the finale. The winning school will take home the biggest cup in SA school sport and bragging rights for a year.
The regional qualifiers from the Eastern and Western Cape will compete at the regional final in Cape Town on October 5.
The grand finale will take place in Pretoria on February 1, 2020. Entry for competing athletes (and schools) will be free of charge.
Events that can be entered will include: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, short hurdles, long hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot-put, discus and javelin for age groups 16 and 19.
